Rekey or Replace Your Locks? A Parramatta Locksmith Explains

Bliss Locksmith Service Parramatta ·

Two of the most common questions we get at our Church St store are "Should I rekey or replace?" and "What's the difference?" Here's the plain-language answer.

What rekeying does

Inside most key-operated cylinders is a set of small pins. Rekeying changes those pins to suit a new key. The lock stays on the door, looks the same and works the same — but the old keys stop working.

What replacing does

Replacing removes the lock hardware completely and fits a new lock. You get new keys and new hardware.

When rekeying usually makes sense

  • The lock works smoothly and is in good condition
  • You've moved into a new home and don't know who has copies of the keys
  • Keys have been lost or not returned by a tenant, tradesperson or staff member
  • You'd like several doors to work on one key

When replacing usually makes sense

  • The lock is worn, stiff, damaged or failing
  • There's been a break-in or an attempted forced entry
  • You want a stronger or different style of lock — for example adding a deadbolt
  • The existing lock can't be rekeyed or parts aren't available

A quick rule of thumb

Lock in good shape + access problem → rekey. Lock in poor shape or not secure enough → replace.

Renting in NSW?

Tenants and landlords have rules about changing locks in NSW, so check with your landlord or managing agent first. We're happy to work with agents directly.
