Key Stuck or Snapped in the Lock? What to Do (and Not Do)
Bliss Locksmith Service Parramatta ·
If the key won't turn
- Don't force it. Forcing a stiff key is the most common way keys snap inside cylinders.
- Check the door. Doors can drop or swell with the weather. Lift or push the door slightly toward the frame and try again.
- Check the key. A worn or badly cut copy may not line up with the pins. Try the original key if you have it.
- Use the right lubricant. Use a graphite or lock-specific product, not cooking oil, which attracts dirt.
If the key has snapped
- If part of the key is sticking out, you may be able to grip it gently with needle-nose pliers and pull it straight out.
- Don't push the broken piece further in or try superglue — both often turn a simple extraction into a lock replacement.
- Keep the other half of the key. It can help with cutting a new one.
